The Carmarthen Penlan workhouse infirmary and boiler house were built circa 1837 by the Carmarthen Poor Law Union as part of the town's workhouse. Since then it has had a colourful past. Once stormed by protestors during the Rebecca Riots who were dispersed by the 4th Light Dragoons. More recently the buildings have been used by Carmarthenshire County Council as offices.

It is believed that the architect for the building was George Morgan, who is associated with many religious & public use buildings in Wales.
