Property description
Nestling in 0.43 acre of beautiful grounds and set well back from the road, this delightful detached bungalow in the hamlet of West Hougham is a real treasure. It was originally constructed in the Edwardian era as illustrated by to the intriguing tiles on the porch wall depicting Edward VII and Queen Alexandra but has been sensitively extended by the current owners. As you walk through the impressive wrought iron gates and through the newly restored porch, the interior opens up before you like a veritable Tardis. The inner reception room is large enough to house a dining table where at least eight to ten people can sit round in comfort and this leads through an archway to a spacious lounge and a second sitting room. These rooms offer plenty of natural light as they have a range of picture windows and French doors to the enormous wraparound patio and overlook the main part of the lovely garden with its lawn, flower beds, flowering trees, fruit trees, as well as a variety of other mature trees and shrubs.
There are three good sized double bedrooms with the master having a vast range of fitted wardrobes, drawers and shelving. A modern shower room with quality fitted storage units and a well-designed light and bright kitchen/breakfast room complete the internal accommodation. The kitchen includes high quality tiles, a built in double oven and a gas hob as well as an integrated dishwasher and a large arch through to the utility area.
Plans did exist for converting the roof space into two further bedrooms and a bathroom and, while these plans have lapsed, it should not be difficult for them to be reinstated if additional rooms are required.
Outside you will find so much to see. An old tack room that is now used as a garden shed, an ornamental pond, a large carport and an intriguing flint built detached cottage with stairs to an attic room with a charming stained glass window that could be refurbished to make an excellent annex. There is even the possibility of creating a building plot in the rear garden subject to the necessary planning permissions and consents.
What the Owner says:
“We moved here about 17 years ago and thought we would live here for the rest of our lives as we loved the location so much. Unfortunately medical circumstances have forced us to make the decision to move although we shall be very sad to leave. During the time we have been here we have completely renovated and extended the property and revelled in the delights of the superb garden. It is an excellent place for entertaining as guests can flow through from the hall and the reception rooms and out into the garden. The large patio is ideal for outdoor entertaining and we have even enjoyed parties for all the family with a large bouncy castle for the children and barbecues for the adults.
West Hougham is a delightful place to live and the community is very friendly. We have a village hall that offers plenty of activities for young and old alike. There is even a regular pop-up pub in the hall for the residents to enjoy a convivial get together and a pop-up bistro if you would like a three course meal, as well and a nearby recreation ground with climbing frames and swings for the children. About two and a half miles down the road there is an excellent farm shop where you can buy locally sourced meat, fruit and vegetables.
The bungalow is very convenient for both the towns of Folkestone and Dover. Both the Port of Dover and the Channel Tunnel Terminal to France are within 15 minutes travel.
