HISTORICAL NOTES This property was, without access to deeds, a tricky one to date as Southdown Rd was re-numbered in 1957 due to infill development in the area. However, by cross referencing resident names, I am reasonably certain this property was built as No55 and thus first occupied in 1935 by Thomas Semadeni with neighbours at No53 (George Lewis) and No57 (Charles Allen - machinist). At the time, Southdown Rd comprised of a scattering of houses at the lower Oldfield Park end leading to a group of larger homes concentrated around Southdown Stores and Southdown Lodge. In addition to the local Post Office, there was also a grocer (Camp Garden Stores) and a fish restaurant (Melrose - run by J Havill). At the Englishcombe Lane end of the road, much of the ground was used as a nursery (of the garden variety) run by Matthew Coombe.

No55 was vacant in 1936 and occupied by Thomas Frederick Bateman in 1937. In 1938 the occupants were George Griffiths & Arthur Bessant.
