LOCAL INFORMATION In 1779, John Wesley wrote that Paulton people were "the liveliest in all the circuit". Since Wesley's round stretched as far as the Isle of Wight, this was high praise indeed for the Methodist congregation of the village. Paulton's history is primarily as a centre of industry in Somerset – Purnell's printing works was founded in the village in 1830 and, at its peak, employed over 2000 local residents. The Boot and Shoe factory founded by the Flook family (more recently Ashmans) stood where Green Close is now. However, the village also has a church rebuilt by John Pinch in 1839 and a war memorial naming the crew and passengers of a glider which crashed in the parish in 1944 en route to Operation Market Garden in Arnhem.

By 1900, the building of Jubilee Terrace and Victoria Terrace connected the main village of Paulton with the hamlet of Britten.
