Property description

Set among the rolling hills of the Kent countryside, De Havillands is an attractive enclave of 10 large, individually designed properties on the outskirts of the village of Bekesbourne, built about 18 years ago. It was the site of an aerodrome during World War I and was the home of the Kent Flying Club until World War II, when it was closed. One large hangar remained but it was severely damaged by and rebuilt after the Great Storm of October 1987, but in 1997 the site was redeveloped to create the De Havillands estate.

This property is truly unique and backs directly onto farmland as far as the eye can see. However, you need to cross the threshold to appreciate what this wonderful family home really has to offer. From the moment you enter through the bespoke African hardwood front door your fascinating journey begins. The star of the show is the fabulous kitchen/dining family areas with stunning and uninterrupted views across rural Kent. Extended recently to include a relaxing bay seating area, access to the terrace and a superb new kitchen, this is where the family spend much of their time and also where you can host wonderful parties. The kitchen includes a built-in oven and microwave, a large integrated fridge and freezer as well as a dishwasher, a central island and adjacent utility room.

There is also a large and elegant sitting room and study off the entrance hall as well as a snug that is currently being used as a consulting/treatment room. In addition, there is a very useful annex incorporating a large sixth bedroom and en suite shower room with French doors to the garden and a separate entrance. This would make an ideal space for elderly relatives, staff or guests who find the stairs difficult. You will also find a vast tandem garage/workshop with doors at both ends. This has to be the ultimate ‘man cave’ as it currently houses a helicopter and a partly constructed fixed-wing plane.

On the first floor, there are four double bedrooms including the beautiful master with an en suite bath/shower room and a large fitted dressing area that could become another bedroom if required. The second bedroom has en suite facilities.

What the Owner says:

The house has been in the family since it was first built and we have loved living here. We have enjoyed extending and updating the property over the years, particularly incorporating the dining area with the family area and installing the new kitchen, converting the original garage to give us a sixth bedroom and building the new garage. The house is also a great place for entertaining and, on sunny days, we can open up the family area onto the large terrace where guests can enjoy al fresco dining. However, we feel it is time to move nearer to other members of the family. Being in a cul-de-sac it is also extremely quiet and peaceful as well as being safe and secure for children, who can ride their bikes around in perfect safety. The village is such a friendly place and we never get tired of listening to the birds and experiencing the changing seasons when we look at the views of the surrounding countryside. There are plenty of footpaths for wonderful walks, a riding stable is virtually on the doorstep for horsey enthusiasts and we have a very useful deli and café as well as a vet with a hydrotherapy centre within walking distance. There is a bus service, a main-line railway station with free parking and a village hall where a variety of activities take place. These include dog training, bridge, short mat bowls, exercise classes and a drama club. You can also take the family to the world famous Howletts Animal Park as it is virtually round the corner.
