Nestled in the pretty hamlet of The Shoe, just over 10 miles from Bath and just over 7 miles from Chippenham, is Heather Cottage, a charming 4 bedroom period cottage dating back to 1827. It was a combination of the beautiful, yet convenient, location nestled in the countryside with magnificent, far-reaching views across open fields and the pretty walled garden that initially attracted my husband and I to Heather Cottage, says Nicola.Over the years the original cottage had been extended and we have redecorated and restyled the entire house whilst retaining character features. In recent months weve commissioned a beautiful, bespoke boot-room, added hand-made, new windows, window shutters and put in a new carpet in the main living room. It is a lovely home that has suited us so well as a family . Downstairs takes in the lovely views of the private walled garden, and from the bedrooms all you can see is open countryside and local wild-life; to wake up to such spectacular views is a wonderful feeling and sets you up for the day ahead.The garden is very pretty, private and easy to maintain, continues Nicola. We have an attractive, flag-stone patio enclosed by a low stone wall, perfect for al-fresco eating. Wisteria and roses thrive in the south facing garden. It is a sun trap from morning until the evening. The off-road parking for 4 or more cars was also part of what drew us to Heather Cottage and we have recently been granted planning permission to increase the size of the garden space, extend the surrounding Cotswold stone wall to the property, install electric gates, and build a free-standing garage with separate auxiliary accommodation above. The kitchen, which features hand-painted units, and granite worktops, flows straight into the dining room, says Nicola. Its a lovely big space for preparing and cooking meals but it is also great for entertaining.The house has the original arched cellar which my husband currently uses as his home gym and for storing wine, says Nicola, and a large, walk-about, attic space, both of which have the potential to be transformed into extra accommodation if and when required. The location of The Shoe is perfect: we have easy access to Chippenham train station, the M4, the wonderful shopping and restaurants, galleries and theatre of Bath and thriving Bristol, says Nicola, but we also have open countryside on our door step with an abundance of picturesque country paths and walks for dogs. We are surrounded by pretty North Wiltshire villages including the famous Castle Combe with its breath-taking beauty and one of the finest golf courses in England. In addition, the delightful village of Marshfield is just under 2 miles away with its excellent school, pubs and shops and the lovely village of Colerne is just over 2 miles away. This has been such a happy home for the past eleven years, says Nicola. Its a warm, comfortable house with so much character, and for us the setting could not have been more ideal. This house is ready for the new owners to move in and enjoy the beautiful, surrounding countryside.
