Ivy Cottage – A Short History of Its Beginnings
The house was completed in 1876 having been built for the six sisters of the local Townsend family, all of whom worked in Haworth's booming textile industry. At the time it would be considered to be very unusual for six women to be granted a mortgage to build a house but build it they did for the sum of £240, with the help of the Keighley and Craven Benefit Building Society.
In the 1881 Census the Townend sisters were resident in their new home at 67 New Road Side, Brow, which was the original address of the property. Over the years it is thought that all the sisters either left the house or married with the exception of Christiana and Suzy. Both continued at the house and by the time of the 1901 Census they had been joined by a cousin and two nephews, again all working in the local textile industry. In the same census it was noted that Suzy was now deaf, hardly surprising given the nature of her work in a clattering weaving shed.
Christiana died in November 1916, leaving Suzy who lived on until August 1935, having lived in Ivy Cottage for 59 years. The house then passed to a Percy Ogden, a schoolteacher, for £360. How monetary values have changed!

OWNER OPINION
We moved to Ivy Cottage from Bradford just before Christmas in 1987, having been seduced into purchasing by the fantastic view of Haworth and surrounding countryside from the back windows of the house. The view is a constantly changing panorama, the more so as the seasons roll by. Equally, guests who have stayed in the back bedroom, have always commented on the privilege of waking up to this amazing view.
