HISTORICAL NOTES The road is named after Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. Serving as MP for Bath between 1847 and 1851, Lord Shaftesbury is more popularly commemorated by the Shaftesbury Memorial in Piccadilly Circus, London (known colloquially if incorrectly as Eros).

Built in 1892 as Shaftesbury Buildings, the road was renamed in 1899 and consisted at that time of 18 houses. By 1902, the full terrace of 25 was occupied and this property was the home of W.E Draper - a linotype operator. By 1907, the street was finished up to Moorland Rd.
