HISTORICAL NOTES Holloway means the road in the hollow (although there is a debate that it also meant "Holy Way" as it was the medieval pilgrimage route to Wells) and was formerly called Haul Down. It is a continuation of the Fosse Way and was until 1770 the main route to Bath from the south west. Due to the steepness of Holloway (stagecoaches often had to stop at the Bear pub for refreshments) a later turnpike road (the Wells Road or Wellsway) was built which climbs more gently. John Leland (c.1503-1552), Henry VIII's antiquarian, described the area of Holloway as "a rocky hill, full of fair springs of water; and on this rocky hill is set a fair street, as a suburb to the city and in this street is a chapel of St Mary Magdalen".

The Magdalen Chapel, which is likely to have Norman origins, was rebuilt by Prior John Cantlow in 1495. The dedication to Mary Magdalene links the chapel with the nearby leper hospital (recorded in existence prior to 1212 when a legacy was left to the "house of lepers in the suburbs of Bath").

The slopes of Beechen Cliff were formerly called Blake or Black Leigh and known as the herb garden of Bath Apothecaries. Beechen Cliff has been a source of inspiration for many, including Jane Austen, John Wood and Thomas Hardy. The painter Walter Sickert immortalized the area in his painting "Paradise Row, Holloway".
