Property description

Three bedroom semi-detached cottage located in the sought-after village of Freshford. Offering two reception rooms, kitchen, utility room, downstairs W.C., bathroom, garage, parking and garden. This delightful three-bedroom cottage, which can trace its origins back to about 1690, is located on a quiet lane in the centre of the much sought-after village of Freshford just under five miles from Bath. It has a detached garage, driveway parking, private rear garden and to the front there are pleasant views over the fields to Turleigh.“We came here 11 years ago,” says Julie, “when our children were small. We loved everything about it, the whole package. We loved the house itself, the flow of the rooms and the happy feel of it - it’s light and airy. We loved the convenience of being in the centre of a lovely village in a quiet location but within walking distance of an excellent primary school, yet having driveway parking, a garage, a garden, and even a view.”“It was so right for us, we didn’t need to make many changes to make it a perfect home,” explains Rob. “We had a dormer window put in the third bedroom, so we could use more of the floor space, and we added a utility room, which provides space for laundry appliances, the fridge freezer and has a pantry and a WC. We also rebuilt the front porch, keeping its original style. The hallway still has its original flagstones but we put wooden floors in the reception rooms and added a Jetmaster open fire with a Bath stone surround that sits in the large inglenook fireplace, which is really lovely at Christmas.”“The old deeds show that the house was once a blacksmith’s shop,” adds Julie, “which was enlarged and altered in the Georgian and Victorian periods; the driveway at the side was once the site of the village lock-up! At the back of the house, there is now a cottage-style garden with areas of lawn, flower beds and a vegetable patch. It’s partially walled and there’s a patio adjoining the kitchen, which gets the sun for a large part of the day in the summer - it has space for a table and chairs, so it’s perfect for eating outside.”“We will be sad to leave both the house and our neighbours, but now the children are older, we need something a little bigger,” continues Rob. “We’d like to stay locally though, as Freshford is such a great community. It has a Memorial Hall, where all kinds of clubs and societies meet, while next door to it is a village shop, which is something of a delicatessen and has a cafe attached. There’s a lot going on.” Julie agrees: “And Freshford’s train station takes you into the centre of Bath in about 10 minutes, where you can connect with trains to London; Bath has lovely shops and a wide range of both state and private schools. Bradford-on-Avon is also close by and has a Sainsbury’s. There are lots of places to walk or cycle near the canals and rivers and plenty of places to visit. Freshford is a wonderful place to live.”
