The owners have informed us of some fascinating historical history behind the names of Butt Hill and nearby Butterstile Lane. The word Butt Hill relates to archery practise and the name Butterstile derives from the time of the plague, when farmers who produced butter left the butters on a stile, to avoid coming into contact with people who may have the plague, and the purchasers of their goods in turn left payment there.
