Property description

OPEN HOUSE: SATURDAY, 9 JULY, 10.00 - 13.0012 North Street is a Grade ll* listed building in the Georgian market town of Wisbech. The back part was built in the 1600s and the grander front part in the late eighteenth century. The accommodation is spread over five floors and full of characters. As you step into the spacious and airy reception hall you note the painted floor with a geometric design in grey and cream, original decorative panelling, the working period fireplace and an elegant elliptical staircase which turns round and round to the top floor with its simple painted spindles and mahogany, serpentine handrail lit by a domed skylight above. All the rooms are a fabulous size (even the attic rooms), and virtually all feature open period fireplaces, and Georgian sash windows, many with panelling, and all the doors are original. The grander rooms have high ceilings with central roses and deep cornicing, others in the older part at the back have more rustic ceiling beams. The reception rooms have original exposed timber floorboards, and the bedrooms have fitted carpets. The farmhouse-style kitchen has some exposed structural ceiling beams, two windows into wells under street level, a terracotta pamment tiled floor and some old fitted cupboards. The range style gas cooker sits neatly into the old chimney breast, and there is a butler sink amid wooden worktops. Doors lead off the kitchen to a spacious utility area and to a downstairs shower.Directly outside the back of the house a sheltered, motley-paved and partially lawned area including a quaint spot with seating capturing the sun, incorporates an old stable with a curved wall, still housing the original manger. Backing onto the stable is a wood-store reached through a pretty, dusky pink and white chequerboard painted wall, beyond which a path down a lawn leads to the parking area. Oil Mill Lane nearby leads to double-gates which access a gravelled area large enough for four to six vehicles enclosed by mature evergreen hedging. It has been suggested that (subject to the necessary planning consent) this parking area could be moved to the area closer to the back of the house, and the current parking space developed further. A pre-planning application has been submitted to the council for building two cottages here, with architectural site plans drawn up. The property has a perfect position as everything is accessible on foot within a few minutes - doctors, dentists, chemists, opticians, banks - and the sports centre, rugby club and much sought after Wisbech Grammar School are literally down the road.
