Property description

Steeped in history, the origins of this delightful Grade II listed 18th century L-shaped property can be traced back to at least 1740. It was originally a malt house then became a beer house until 1907 and ultimately a pub called the Eight Bells until 1998. The pub took its name from the eight musical bells that were recast from the original six at St. Mary’s Church in Wingham in 1719.

After 1998 it was completely refurbished to become a delightful family home enclosed behind a gated courtyard, with a stunning cottage style garden, large garage and carport surrounded by beautiful Kentish countryside as far as the eye can see.

The Georgian wing, with the date 1779 above the front door, boasts a recently refitted kitchen and three refurbished bathroom or shower rooms, servicing four bedrooms. This part of the house has a splendid split-level dining and living area featuring an adjoining door to the annex, a wealth of exposed beams and a wood-burning stove in one of the two fireplaces.

The annex wing features an immensely spacious reception hall, easily large enough to accommodate dining room furniture. This hall, resplendent in oak-panelled walls, exposed beams, and wide oak floor boards has doors leading off to a cloakroom WC, a large study and a delightfully bright and airy sitting room. The accommodation in the annex upstairs comprises two bedrooms, the larger with an en-suite shower room.

This desirable home oozes character of a bygone age; there are masses of exposed beams, working fireplaces and even the original beer cellar. The property would be perfect for dividing into two separate homes, giving an older or younger generation a high degree of independence.

What the Owner says:

“We love the house and the area, with the countryside in all directions but feel we need to move to somewhere a little smaller. It is so quiet and peaceful and we can walk the dog along the footpaths and fields and often never meet a soul. We have very friendly neighbours in the hamlet and when we arrived everyone made an effort to make us feel welcome.
We are only a few miles from Canterbury and Sandwich while Wingham has a general store, a post office, pubs and restaurants. You can walk to the nearby Haywain for a meal and the excellent Gibson’s farm shop provides top-quality local produce or somewhere to relax with a cup of coffee.
We have thoroughly enjoyed putting in a new kitchen and bathrooms and spending time creating the lovely garden including a special area for the children, or sitting in our secluded courtyard terrace, admiring the view and listening to the birds. It has also been fun to use the playroom above the large garage. This area is large enough for a pool or table-tennis table and is a great space for the children.
If anyone is looking to provide independent accommodation for other family members, the original part of the house could become a self-contained home as the study could easily be converted into a kitchen.”
