Historic note: Tonkin House was built in 1830 by John Tonkin, a prosperous Methodist businessman from St. Ives who started the brickworks in Wedmore. He built the large emporium next door in addition to this dwelling house using \"Tonkin\" bricks and \"fish-tail\" tiles especially designed and made in his brickworks.

It dates from the late Georgian period and retains many original details including ornate cornices and ceiling roses, working window shutters, marble and cast iron fireplaces, and a particularly fine staircase and balustrade above the galleried dining hall.
