Property description

Steeped in history, the Barracks in Deal date from the 1800s, although the first platoon of Marines was originally stationed in Deal as long ago as 1665. When the Royal Marines School of Music left the Barracks in 1996 the various military complexes were converted to residential dwellings.

This property is an unusual Grade II listed detached house in the North Barracks complex and has a blue plaque commemorating the fact that it was the home of Sir Vivian Dunn who became the director of music for the Royal Marines.

It has been completely renovated over the years but incorporates many historical features such as panelling from the officers’ mess and an historical fireplace from the neighbouring house. As you cross the threshold you will be impressed by the 18ft ceiling above the staircase and the light and airy ambience throughout this large family home.

There is a charming kitchen with a range cooker and a recess large enough to take an American-style fridge/freezer, a sizeable utility room as well as a large boot room. In the lovely kitchen the whole family can congregate, whether it is mum or dad cooking up a storm or the kids doing their homework.

There is an elegant drawing room, a further reception room currently set up as a pool room that could make an excellent study or TV room, as well as a charming dining room for hosting lunch and dinner parties.

The master bedroom is directly linked to another bedroom currently used as a very large dressing room as well as two further double bedrooms, a study/bedroom, that could become an en suite, and the family bathroom. Outside, the easy-to-maintain secluded garden and terrace is just the place for a barbecue and there are allocated parking spaces in the communal grounds.

What the Owner says:

We bought this house directly from the Ministry of Defence in 1997 so it has never previously been on the open market. When we moved in, it had been empty for four years and we bought it “as seen” and we had to completely renovate it from top to bottom. We had great fun creating a wonderful family home and have all thoroughly enjoyed our life here but now the children have grown up it is really too big for us. Hopefully another family will be able to make it their own and get as much pleasure out of it as we have. One of the things we really liked about it was that the area is very quiet and a safe and secure environment for children.
We shall definitely be staying in the area as we enjoy Deal and have made lots of friends over the years. It is a lovely spot and is only a minute’s walk to the seafront where there are wonderful walks as well as the beach.
For sporting enthusiasts there is a friendly rugby club nearby, an excellent sailing club and top-class golf courses on the outskirts of the town. Deal is charming and includes a wide range of hotels, restaurants, pubs and individual shops as well as supermarkets for day-to-day requirements.
