Willow Barn is a very special house. Apart from the fact it sits in an idyllic tranquil spot on, effectively an island, it is one of the first properties in this country to be built based on Ayurvedic principles, called Sthapatya Veda or (Maharishi) Vastu Architecture, meaning 'of well-being and wealth'. Some of the Ayurvedic principles that were followed are that the front of the house faces East capturing the morning sun, and has entrance doors on the North side and the East. It is also auspicious to have water in the East, and although the River Ouse runs behind the property the river to the front, the Relief Channel, is closer.There are openings of windows and internal doors on the centre line North-South and East-West on both the ground floor and the first floor allowing light to flood in. Natural light also bathes the house from a roof window in the centre, with a roof ornament or kalash on top; this central Brahmasthan space of light is the nucleus for the whole structure.Another feature of Ayurveda is a low vastu wall enclosing the house. Beyond the vastu wall is a lovely open naturalistic garden with primroses multiplying along the bank at the front of the house. It's mainly laid to lawn and has a small wooded area to one side.
