Property description
Stanley House is an impressive period family home, situated in the middle of this sought after village on the edge of the Mendips with excellent transport links to Bath, Bristol and Wells. Having been in the same family for some 80 years, this is a unique opportunity to acquire a fine home, with a substantial garden and separate paddock. The is further extensive parking accessed off Peterside with gated access and a separate workshop all linking directly to the rear of the garden. As our clients, Annie and Richard explain:Stanley House has been in the family for 80 years or so, my grandparents used to live here says Richard. As they got older and less capable it did become run down. I had very fond memories of being here as a child, when the opportunity presented itself I took the bull by the horns and bought it to renovate for my own family. It took around 20 years to do the whole place. We dont know how old the house is but we think it must be pre 1900. My grandfather had the bay windows built on using stone from his own quarry.Annie told us Having been here for 35 years leaving Stanley House will be a very emotional day. Its already hard when the grandchildren plead with us to stay but even they are almost too old for endless games of hide and seek, the place needs a family to fill it again. Its the perfect house for special occasions, plenty of room. The cellar and the walled garden have been great spaces for everything from Christenings, birthdays, Halloween, teenage parties to an 80th birthday for Mum. One child seeing the cellar for the first time said Oh, youve got your own pub.Richard told us We are in a good position here 20 minutes from Wells, Bath and Bristol. All three cities are busy with events, lots to see and do throughout the year. Wells, the smallest city in England, has a twice weekly award winning market and plenty of restaurants, as do some of the local villages including one with a Michelin Star. Bristol Airport is also only 20 minutes away. If you are into golf we have Farrington Park just down the road their gym is open to non-golf club members.Annie continued The closest supermarkets are in the small town of Midsomer Norton which is about a fifteen minute drive away. Some years ago a farm shop opened at Farrington Gurney this has now grown into a little shopping village with attractions for children, less than ten minutes away, in the spring you can pick your own tulips there. Schools in the area are good, we have a primary school in the village. Chew Valley School is in an amazing country setting close to the beautiful Chew Valley Lake, one of our sons learnt to sail there while in sixth form. There is also Wells Blue School or the private Cathedral School. The village petrol station houses a convenience store, we also have a Chinese takeaway come fish and chip shop. Buses run from Bristol to Wells and back every half an hour.Annie and Richard agreed they would both miss lots about Stanley House, the large country kitchen/diner, the walled garden, the views, the spacious cellar but said Its time for us to move on now and let a younger family make full use of this lovely home.
