Property description
17th Century five bedroom detached home close to all the amenities of Box, tucked away down a quiet lane. Offering large sitting room and two further reception rooms., kitchen breakfast room, utility, and double garage allowing a great work space. Stunning gardens and fantastic views. We often passed this house on our walks. We always said how we would love to live in such a house. Its special magic was obvious and it was perfectly placed in outstanding countryside, with glorious views across the Bibrook valley to Colerne, down to Bath and beyond to the Mendips. When it came onto the market in 2006, we used every possible resource available to us to buy the house. It was in a very sad, neglected, state of repair but we were assured by surveyors and architects that it was in sound condition. Built in the early 1600s, our aim was to give the house back its character and natural charm and for it, once more, to become a family home, and one full of the luxury and comforts of modern day living. Our main reception room is extremely bright and sunny, with beautiful beams and features an exceptionally beautiful fireplace; such an amazing room on dark winter evenings when the fire is roaring away. There is also an old bread oven. We use the dining room when our family and friends are around but, for day to day living, we eat mainly in our kitchen area with its Aga. It is an incredibly social space where guests insist in joining us to chat whilst we are preparing meals. Our snug is next to this room and a special space for quiet relaxation. Mills Platt is amazing house in which to entertain and at Christmas it comes into its own. We put as much energy into restoring the garden as we did to the house. It is a garden for all seasons and there is something to catch your attention every month of the year. Many of our plants are perfumed and therefore the garden abounds with butterflies and bees. We have also created a wildflower meadow and we do enjoy the variety of visiting wildlife. We have many places to sit with a quiet drink or dine. It is a garden for children (and grandchildren) to explore and it is perfect for hide and seek.Box village is vibrant and friendly with lots of shops and activities. The primary school has an Ofsted rating of Excellent and there are good state and independent schools all within easy reach. Bath is just seven miles away and Chippenham is the preferred station for journeys into London Paddington with trains every half and hour.We do feel we have been privileged custodians of this special house and, whether it be drinks in the garden with friends, eating strawberries and enjoying the magical sunsets, or sitting around the roaring fire in our sitting room, these are some of the special memories of our life here which we will treasure forever.
