About the area
Butleigh is an historic village within easy reach of the surrounding local towns of Glastonbury (4 miles), Street (3½ miles) and Wells (10 miles) and also the larger centres of Yeovil to the south and Bath and Bristol to the north. The A303 lies just to the south and there is a main rail line station at Castle Cary, with access to London Paddington in 2 hours and 6 minutes, and Bristol Airport is just 27 miles away. Street is a popular and busy town well known for Clarks Retail Village. Glastonbury's past and present are linked with its dominant landmark, the Tor. The town grew up alongside the Abbey and is now a small but thriving town and a major tourist venue.Just 5 miles from Glastonbury is Wells, which is the smallest city in England. Its centre is the market place (local markets twice a week) surrounded by many medieval buildings including the Cathedral and the moated Bishops Palace. There are excellent, local state schools in the area including the primary school in the village, St. Dunstans, Wells Blue School and Strode College. Noted independent schools include Millfield, Wells Cathedral School, Downside, All Hallows and the Bruton schools.
