Property description

This attractive red brick, slate-roofed, Edwardian house with its original bay windows either side of the front door was built in 1903 and has been a much loved family home for almost twenty years.

The house is set back slightly from the road with a low brick wall marking the boundary; the drive and front is completely block-paved in a herringbone pattern and leads down the side of the house to a pitched slate-roofed garage with solid timber barn-style doors. An interesting exterior feature is a plinth of granite surrounding the building which gives a taste of the style and grandeur within. On stepping through the period, magenta-coloured, glazed front door you find yourself in a hall filled with light and screaming exceptional quality. The owners have spent a huge amount of effort and money refurbishing the property to a very high standard. Polished stone – mixes of marble and granite - seems to be the choice of material which is employed to enhance the already characterful home, and this use throughout the property gives unity and cohesion, as well as adding glamour and grandeur. The lovely wide hallway gleams as the light catches a floor of Ivory Fantasy granite inlaid with a black granite border, the ivory extending up the walls as skirting. The ceiling is high with a picture rail and decorative coving, and from the central ceiling rose hangs an elegant chandelier. Behind this is an original overhead plastered beam with intricately decorated corbels, the cream carpeted stairs stretching beyond. In symmetrical fashion original, pine, panelled doors open either side to the front reception rooms. On the right is the main, more formal, sitting room's a wonderful room lined with a subtly printed, neutral-coloured wallpaper, fitted with a cream carpet and flooded with light as the room faces the south. The picture rail, detailed cornicing, architraving, skirting and ceiling rose are highlighted in a soft muted green to match the room's colour scheme.

On the other side of the hall is the everyday living room which is equally light, bright and spacious with similar original features and the second south facing, original, bay window. There is another fitted cream wool carpet and the restrained but beautiful marble fireplace (complementing the simple ceiling rose) was commissioned and fitted by the owners a year ago. Within the grate is a remote-controlled gas fire. At the end of the hall under the stairs is the dining room with double French doors onto the patio and garden. This is yet another large and elegant period room with a softly geometric neutral wallpaper, and a fabulous polished marble floor with matching skirting installed by the owners.

The completely bespoke kitchen is another splendid showpiece. Situated next to the dining room, also with double French doors onto the patio at the rear, it is a beautiful light room where gleaming granite abounds. The traditional décor is a combination of solid pine fitted units, including a pine Welsh dresser, with Verde Fontain granite employed as worktops, the corbelled surround over and around the hob (which nestles in the old chimney breast) as well as the flooring and kickboards of the units. The cooker has a gas hob (fuelled by mains gas), and below is a separate grill and electric oven. A double butler sink with chrome mixer tap sits under the window overlooking the garden, and there is space under the worktops for a free-standing fridge and dishwasher. Moving from the kitchen into the utility area which occupies the old back porch at the end of the hallway, you find the downstairs cloakroom on the left with a low-level WC and a corner handbasin. The utility is well lit from windows on both sides, and fitted with painted cream, contemporary units from Howdens Joinery incorporating a butler sink under Juparana Colombo marble worktops – a beautiful swirling greys and soft pinks pattern in the stone. The floor is in the same marble, and there is space for a free-standing, tall, larder fridge or fridge freezer, a washing machine, and a tumble dryer. A semi-glazed door at the end leads onto the patio at the back of the house.

Upstairs, the feeling of quality and comfort continues. From the relatively newly carpeted stairs and under an original arch on the landing all four very good-sized double bedrooms (even the smallest guest room accommodates a double bed) and the fabulous bathroom are within easy reach. The largest - the master – overlooks the garden at the back and the side of the property and is decorated with a pretty, neutral-coloured wallpaper, and features a picture rail, decorative ceiling rose with chandelier, and has a fitted cream carpet.

Another tour de force in this home is the opulent, big bathroom which has been fitted with no expense spared. Again, polished stone is the theme, and in this case Star Galaxy black granite clads the walls, and is mixed with borders and detailing in Civic White natural marble which also covers the floor. The semi-circular shower cubicle houses an overhead Huppi thermostatic shower with full-body jets. The huge Whirlpool bath with fully-remote control Jacuzzi and separate jets, with a self-cleaning system, makes a big statement along with the twin Villeroy and Boch handbasins in the vanity unit under a classy mirror. LED lights are recessed into the ceiling and in the mirror surround, and the WC is also Villeroy and Boch. Heating is from small radiators under the two windows which overlook the rear garden, and from a wall-mounted, chrome, heated towel-rail.

Outside, the sunny, sheltered garden is a good size with paving immediately behind the house ideal for al fresco dining as doors open from the kitchen, utility and dining room onto this area. A lawn with a central path extends beyond surrounded by mature evergreen hedging and some lovely old trees and a few shrubs. The garden is not really overlooked at all making it a lovely space for entertaining and family recreation.
