About the Area
Butleigh is an historic village within easy reach of the surrounding towns and also Yeovil to the south and Bath and Bristol to the north. The A303 is just south and there is a main rail line station at Castle Cary (Paddington about 90 minutes). Street is the nearest town and is increasingly popular as a shopping centre. Practically as close is Glastonbury and its dominant landmark, the Tor. The Celtic monastery here evolved into one of England\‘s wealthiest and most influential abbeys. The town grew up alongside the Abbey and is now a small but thriving town and a major tourist venue. Street and Glastonbury are the homes of Millfield School and the Prep.Just 5 miles from Glastonbury is Wells which is the smallest city in England (population 10,000 with its market place surrounded by many medieval buildings including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace.

Schools
There are excellent state schools including the primary school in the village, St. Dunstans, Wells Blue School and Strode College. The independent sector includes Millfield, Wells Cathedral School, Downside, All Hallows and the Bruton schools. The surrounding and nearby countryside includes rolling farmland, wooded hills and the Mendip Hills (an area of outstanding natural beauty), all providing a wonderful habitat for wildlife and all remarkably accessible and available. Butleigh is a friendly and popular village with a population of around a thousand, a thriving general stores shop and post office, an active church, a very well regarded nursery and primary school, an excellent pub (good food) and various societies and organisations including a local cricket club. Within easy reach are many societies and clubs with a wide coverage of sporting and cultural activities.

About the Ponds
One would be hard pressed to find grounds as spectacular as these Victorian ponds hidden in a beautiful copse and all a mere six minute walk from one of Somerset\‘s finest pubs. The ponds were developed by the Squire of Butleigh, Robert Neville Grenville whose initials are to be found on the house. The Squire used the ponds as a fish breeding facility which is fed by two springs one of which is found in the formal garden behind the house, the other at the top of the fields. The Squire, an engineer by profession, created an extraordinary sequence of amazing waterways and streams that gravity feed the main breeding ponds. The large and beautiful ponds have been recently used as a carp breeding facility and they also have been used as a natural swimming pool.

**
To recreate Fishponds today would be immensely costly and it would be impossible to replicate the aura and spirit that this stunning property with its beautiful borders and constant streams and waterways evoke. It is a place of unique peacefulness and tranquility and all this quietly tucked away only a short drive from Glastonbury and Street.
