Property description
It is a rare privilege to have the chance to become the custodian of one of the country’s oldest private properties. However, this simply outstanding medieval Grade I listed property would give you just such an opportunity. Built in the 13th century, with its overhanging first floor and half-timbering, this property in Wingham isn’t just a house – it’s a part of history. According to some historians some of the building could be even older and the cobblestones in the cellar might even be part of an old Roman road.
At the same time this unique property provides a very warm and welcoming feel from the moment you wander into the gorgeous sitting room with its two inglenook fireplaces, oak beams and stunning 15thcentury arched leaded light windows. It is very much a family home; with three main staircases and a number of nooks and crannies there are plenty of places for kids to play hide-and-seek, while the adults can enjoy creating wonderful meals in the delightful kitchen with its range cooker as well as hosting Christmas parties and dinners in the beautiful beamed dining room with its old wooden sprung floor and leading to the impressive medieval front door.
If you want to relax or do some work there is a cosy snug-cum-office adjacent to the kitchen as well as a very useful self-contained office and utility room in the large and delightful, easy-to-maintain walled garden. Here, you can bask in the sunshine in the secluded walled garden or sit under the vine-covered pergola, enjoying a barbecue.
Upstairs there are even more delights. There is a guest suite consisting of two double bedrooms and a shower room leading from a separate staircase and you reach the unique and impressive master bedroom with its crown post roof and vaulted beamed ceiling via another staircase. This leads to a Jack and Jill bathroom and another large double bedroom but if you wanted to close it off, the second bedroom has yet another staircase down to another bathroom. The property benefits from having a single garage which has both light and electricity and, in addition, in front of this there is a driveway with space for one car.
What the Owner says:
The village is a fantastic place to live with many of the locals pulling together to make a lovely little community. It would be a perfect house for entertaining particularly at Christmas, when the house really comes into its own with all the decorations complimented by the stunning features.
Wingham is a very special village. It has everything one could need – an excellent primary school, shop and post office, two very good pubs and restaurants as well as a regular country market and an excellent farm shop nearby. The village hall offers plenty of activities if you want to join in from toddler groups to the sunny and bright club for the senior members of the community.
There are also regular buses every 20 minutes as well as buses specifically for secondary school children going to schools in Canterbury and Sandwich. There are plenty of great places to walk the dogs, including to Ickham if you want to stop at the Duke William for a drink or a meal and the kids will enjoy a visit to Wingham Wildlife Park. In addition, you would only be a short distance from Canterbury with its historic buildings, high street stores, individual shops, universities, theatres and restaurants.
