Property description
The current owners have made an amazing job of what they described as 'a privilege to restore a house which has so much local interest and history for the village'. According to records at Chatham Dockyard, the house was the location of the village telephone; its position can still be seen in a cupboard today! The house features in the village history book as Vening's Cycle Shop, hence the name on the front wall. According to a neighbour who lived in the house as a child, there is a charming reason for the internal window from the stairs to the dining area. Her father ran a shop out of the house and he sold televisions and it allowed the children to view! In the 1930s the garage was added so that the then owner could run the village taxi service, hence the inspection pit, which will please another car enthusiast! The beams and floor boards of the original house are well complimented by the stunning rear extension, which seems to turn the Juliette balcony in the main bedroom into a viewing point over the generous rear garden. This garden is ideal for parties, particularly in the summer, with the bi-folding doors in the ground floor of this extension. A separate dining area allows for more formal occasions, but there is no doubt that after a few drinks the best spot for a relaxing evening is the snug.
Newington is a lovely village, ideally positioned between Sittingbourne and Rainham and retaining its own amenities, including the railway station, perfect for commuters.
What the Owner says:
We've lived here nearly nine years and it's been a labour of love to turn the property into a real family home. We started with a blank canvas and discovered all sorts of hidden treasures along the way, including the fireplace in the front bedroom under some 1960's plaster board and the inglenook in the snug which we've added a wood burning stove to. We can't decide which our favourite room is, but the snug or the kitchen are real contenders, as is the main bedroom which is a real haven.
Transport links are great with the M2 and M20 within easy reach, plus the railway station just round the corner for an easy commute to London, or out to the beach at weekends. It will be a real wrench to move!
