LOCAL INFORMATION
Cholsey lies approximately three miles to the south west of Wallingford. It is recorded that King Ethelred founded a monastery there in 986 to make atonement for the murder of his brother Edward the Martyr. The original village was supposedly destroyed by the Danes in 1006. However, when the survey of Doomsday was taken, the Church of Cholsey belonged to the Abbey of Mount St Michael in Normandy, afterwards given to Reading Abbey. The Lord Chancellor is patron of the vicarage, which is in the deanery of Wallingford. \"Change at Cholsey - again!\" by Judy and Stuart Dewey records village history and was compiled in celebration of the millennium of the village in 1986. It records information about the original tiny Saxon farming community to the thriving lively commuter village of today, together with the lives of the people, spiced with characters and anecdotes. Not only is the story told of the village from the Stone Age to the present day, it also features many other interesting facts, including results of Bronze Age excavations beside the River Thames, information on the cedar trees originally imported from the Lebanon as seeds hidden in the parasol of a 19th century vicar's wife, and the preserved Cholsey and Wallingford Railway (known locally as The Bunk because the locomotive twice left the coaches behind and 'did a bunk'). Agatha Christie is undoubtedly the most famous Cholsey inhabitant. Today the village is a thriving one, and benefits greatly from the main line railway station offering direct access to London Paddington in approximately 45 minutes, 20 minutes to Reading and Oxford. Cholsey is also with convenient access to both the M4 & M40. The village offers a selection of amenities including various shops, restaurant, and Primary School. The centres of both Goring and Wallingford are within equidistance drive of approximately 3 miles, both offer a further selection of amenities.
