Property description

16 Trotternish Avenue is a well presented 3 bed detached property situated in a very quiet child friendly location within the township of Staffin. 3 double bedrooms, lounge, kitchen/diner and family bathroom. The property further benefits from double glazing, off peak storage heating, mains electricity, mains drainage and water. Broadband and digital television are available. The property is within easy walking distance of primary school.

Set beneath the wonderful Trottenish Ridge, Staffin is famed for its lovely beach and amazing geology. With the rugged, yet breathtaking and beautiful scenery, the village boasts amazing views and the Hebridean Minch cuts through the beauty of the peaceful Highland retreat close to Staffin Bay.

The road to the north end of the bay to the Quiraing leads to a spectacular forest of mighty pinnacles and savage rock formations, such as the Prison, the 120 ft Needle and the Table, a great sunken platform where locals used to play shinty.

It is located on the A855 road about 17 miles north of Portree and is overlooked by the Trotternish Ridge with the famous rock formations of The Storr and the Quirang. The Kilmartin River runs northwards through the village, where it reaches the sea a rocky shore leads east to a slipway at An Corran. Here a local resident found a slab bearing a dinosaur track, probably made by a small Ornithopod. Experts subsequently found more dinosaur prints of up to 50 cm, the largest found in Scotland, made by a creature similar to Megalosaurus. At about 160 million years old they are the youngest dinosaur remains to be found in Scotland.

In 2015, there was a major discovery of fossilised dinosaur footprints on the shore just south of Duntulm Castle, at the north end of Trotternish. These prints, visible only at low tide, make up the biggest trackway in Scotland. They are prints of sauropods, a group of huge, long-necked dinosaurs that includes the brontosaurus and brachiosaurus. They date from about 170m years ago, in the Jurassic Period, and are among the very best tracks of their kind in the world. Some of them are huge, and the shape of the feet that left them is very obvious. It is awe inspiring to stand exactly beside where these massive creatures once stood.

In 2011 it was reported that Staffin Island may be the last in Scotland where the old tradition of having cattle swim between grazings is still carried out. Crofter Iain MacDonald, who used to swim with the animals, now uses a boat to encourage them to swim from Staffin Island to Skye in early spring and back again in October.
