Property description
THE MILLFIELDS A superb re-development of the former buildings and grounds comprising the former Royal Naval hospital. 1758 saw the birth of Horatio Nelson and 1759 was known as the Royal Navy's wonderful year and saw them victorious in the battles of Minden, Lagos, Quebec city and Quiberon Bay. Naval supremacy came at a cost and in 1760 the first patients arrived at the Royal Naval Hospital with it being fully operational by 1762. The design of the facility was so far advanced as to make it the finest establishment of its kind in Europe at that stage. It offered care, hospitalisation for the injured Marines who helped to forge the greatest Naval force the world had ever seen.
The hospital served the Royal Navy for 235 years from the Battle of Trafalgar to The Falklands. It saw many additions and changes throughout its long period of service. Latterly it has been an exciting re-development and enterprise with a new established community combining an interesting variety of residential dwellings set in the historic imposing period buildings, together with a variety of business offices.
Some 26 acres of land set behind high natural stone walled grounds lying less than one mile west of Plymouth city. Located not far from the fashionable Durnford Street with the re-development of the Royal William Yard and the waters edge with ferry connections to Mount Edgcumbe Park via the Cremyll Ferry. This fascinating re-development is a designated conservation area administered by English Heritage.
