Property description
This charming cottage is sure to catch your eye. The current owners have gone to great efforts to retain as many of the original features and restore those lost over time. Even from the outside you can see there is something different about this particular home, in the Victorian terrace known as ‘Bethel Cottages’. The pretty wooden front door and interesting church style window brick design start to reveal some of the history of this house, built on the site of Wesleyan Methodist Church, in around 1880 – replacing one of the many churches in and around this aptly named road, the focal point of the village community for hundreds of years. This includes St Mary the Virgin, a Grade I listed building. The character continues inside with the stripped wood floors and range of fireplaces, some original and some replicas to restore the features removed previously. The house is somewhat of a tardis, with the larger than average basement level providing a whole extra floor, perhaps best used as a study room and storage space and offering an additional cloakroom.
The courtyard garden is ideal for those with a busy lifestyle, enough space to enjoy a barbecue and a glass of something cold with friends, but low maintenance so as not to take up all your evening or weekend after a hard week at work. Commuters looking for a semi rural escape will be over the moon with the location, pretty views and walks on your doorstep, but with the railway station, on the Victoria Line 5 minutes walk away too.
What the Owner says:
We found this house and indeed the village of Newington by accident as we were relocating to Kent. How glad we are now that we did! The house is perfect for us, as big fans of period properties. The village too has everything you could ask for, with local shops and the pub. There is great access to the larger towns of Sittingbourne and Rainham and as a result we could not think of a better area locally!
A lot of love has gone into this house and we will be sad to leave, we are moving to be closer to family and hope that the new owners will love the cottage and the village just as much as we do.
