Halkirk

Area Guide For Halkirk

Halkirk (Scottish Gaelic: Hacraig) is a town on the River Thurso in Caithness, in the Highland committee region of Scotland. From Halkirk the B874 street runs towards Thurso in the north and towards Georgemas in the east. The town is inside the ward of Halkirk, and is said by nearby individuals to be Scotland's initially arranged town. It was at one time the site of the house of God of the Diocese of Caithness, yet this was moved to Dornoch in the early thirteenth century. There are no remaining parts of the early church and minister's seat. Halkirk has had two whisky refineries, Gerston from 1796 to 1885, and Ben Morven (otherwise called Gerston II) from 1886 to around 1911. Both were made on the banks of the River Thurso, close Gerston Farm, and both drew water from Calder Burn. The Ben Morven refinery was named for the mountain, the most elevated point in Caithness.
