Duffus Castle sat on the edge of Loch Spynie, which once stretched towards the outskirts of Elgin and down towards Lossiemouth. The defensive position of the castle was very strong as its raised height gives views over the Moray.  The castle itself would have originally been timber and later rebuilt in stone.
