Originally a hamlet, the Colney Hatch of today has a lot of history behind it. In the early part of the 19th century there were some 30 properties in the area, but the later development of the Colney Hatch asylum spurred growth. The hospital (as it was later named), was the largest mental institution in Europe at one time, and even brought on the construction of a railway line. The second phase of developments was triggered by the hospital's closing in 1993, after which it became the Princess Park Manor.
