Killin

Area Guide For Killin

Killin (Cill Fhinn 'the White [or Fair] Church' in Gaelic) is a town arranged at the western head of Loch Tay in Stirling (once in the past Perthshire), Scotland. The west end of the town is wonderfully sited around the picturesque Falls of Dochart, the principle road driving down towards the Loch at the intercection of the streams Dochart and Lochay. The Falls are crossed by a tight, multi-curved stone scaffold convey the principle A827 street into Killin. Killin railway station was on the Killin Railway. The station was authoritatively shut on 1 November 1965. The MacNab Clan were once prevailing here, and have long been connected with Killin. Their old cemetery is on Inchbuie in the River Dochart, just underneath the Falls, and is obvious from the extension. Kinnell House was the seat of the MacNabs. A decently safeguarded ancient standing stone circle (conceivably "restored" to enhance its appearance) can be seen in the grounds of the House. To the north of the town lie the remains of the Campbells of Breadalbane fortress of Finlarig Castle, with its related sanctuary. The developing force of the Campbells inevitably removed the MacNabs, who lost Kinnell House to their opponents.
