Area Guide For Fortrose

Fortrose (Scottish Gaelic: A' Chananaich, Scots: Chainry) is a town and previous burgh in the Scottish Highlands. It is on the Moray Firth, around 6 miles (9.7 km) north-east of Inverness. The town is known for its demolished thirteenth century church, and as the home of the Brahan Seer. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of the priestly district of Ross. The Cathedral was to a great extent destroyed in the mid-seventeenth century by Oliver Cromwell to give building materials to a fortification at Inverness. The vaulted south path, with chime tower, and a disconnected part house (utilized as the tollbooth of Fortrose after the Reformation) remain. These sections, however unobtrusive in scale, show impressive engineering refinement, and are under the watchful eye of Historic Scotland (no passageway charge). The burgh is a prevalent area for attempting to spot bottlenose dolphins (see Chanonry Point) in the Moray Firth. Fortrose offers a fairway with Rosemarkie. Determined to the Chanonry Ness the course extends into the Moray Firth and offers great perspectives of Fort George. The course is remarkable for its signature fourth Hole "Beacon". The beacon being referred to is the Chanonry Point beacon which was composed by Alan Stevenson and was first lit 15 May 1846.
